THE HUMAN ORIGINS OF BRANDS

Before every brand, there is a human.

Human Origins Lab examines how leadership, culture, and employee experience shape the way a brand is enacted — and traces those conditions upstream, to the human experience and human identity they begin in.

Our model is a stated thesis, examined openly. We distinguish it from the evidence the field has already established.

MODEL / HUMAN ORIGINS

The Human Origins Model

Supported
The Human Origins ModelA causal model reading left to right. Frontier zone, shown as dashed ochre rounded boxes and marked as the Lab’s hypothesis under research: Human Experience shapes Human Identity, which shapes Leadership. Mapped territory, shown as solid ink rectangles and appraised against existing evidence: Leadership shapes Governance and Strategy, and also Cultural Norms, meaning what is rewarded. Governance and Strategy shapes Organisational Conditions. Organisational Conditions and Cultural Norms both shape Employee Experience. Employee Experience shapes Product and Service. Product and Service shapes Customer Experience. Customer Experience shapes Brand. External Context is a moderator, not a cause; it moderates Governance and Strategy. A feedback loop runs from Brand back to Human Experience. The Lab’s research sequence runs in the opposite direction to causality: review the mapped evidence first, then work upstream to establish the frontier. The Human Origins ModelBefore every brand, there is a human.Research sequence: review the mapped evidence, then work upstream to establish the frontierHow to read this modelFrontier — our hypothesis, under researchMapped — appraised vs. existing evidenceCausal direction (what shapes what)Research path & feedback loopExternal context — a moderatorEach mapped link carries its own confidence label(Established · Supported · Emerging · Contested · Unknown).EXTERNAL CONTEXTmoderates◀ OUR FRONTIERMAPPED TERRITORY ▶The two upstream links the Lab sets out to establishHumanExperienceHumanIdentityLeadershipGovernance & StrategyOrganisationalConditionsCultural Normswhat is rewardedEmployeeExperienceProduct & ServiceCustomerExperienceBrandFeedback — brand and reputation reshape human experience over timeClick anywhere to close

A research map, not a formula. The model separates frontier hypotheses from mapped evidence, then traces how human conditions move through organisations into brand meaning.

THE ARGUMENT

Brand execution is more than communications.

Leadership, culture, and employee experience shape how a brand is enacted in customer experience. The Lab maps what research can support about those conditions, then investigates how far upstream they can be traced.

ORIGINS / THE LAUNCH PROGRAM

Concept Genealogies

Origins traces where each concept in the model came from: when academia first studied it, the earliest published research, and how it changed from its first formulation to today.

One genealogy is published at a time, fully finished and permanently addressed. The series begins downstream and works upstream, ending at the gap the field has left open.

WHY TRUST THE LAB

We separate what the field knows from what we hypothesize.

Every published genealogy will identify its sources, scope, author, and revision history. Claims about current evidence will also state their confidence and limits.

  • Methods

Our research method explains how sources, concepts, and period boundaries are assessed before findings are published.

  • Sources

Primary works will be recorded alongside each genealogy, so readers can inspect the documentary basis for the historical account.

  • Limits

Contradictory findings, unresolved terms, and limits of transfer remain visible; they are not removed to make the argument tidier.

  • Independence

Funding, conflicts, corrections, and named authorship are part of the public record. Read about the Lab.
